Frequently Asked Health Questions

Everything You Need to Know About Your Sphynx Kitten’s Health & Care

We understand that welcoming a Sphynx kitten into your family comes with many questions. Our goal at Naked Whiskers is to provide honesty, education, and lifelong support so you feel confident caring for your new companion.

Are Sphynx cats really hairless?

Sphynx cats are known for their nearly hairless appearance, but many have a fine, soft layer of peach-fuzz-like fur. Their unique skin requires regular attention because natural oils are not absorbed by a full coat of fur.

Do Sphynx cats need baths?

Yes. Most Sphynx cats require regular bathing to help remove excess oils that build up on their skin. The frequency varies from cat to cat depending on their individual needs. We will provide guidance on establishing a gentle grooming routine that works best for your kitten.

How do you care for a Sphynx cat’s ears?

Sphynx cats often produce more visible ear wax than coated breeds because they lack hair inside the ears to help catch debris. Regular ear checks and gentle cleaning when needed are an important part of their routine care.

Are Sphynx cats prone to health problems?

Like all breeds, Sphynx cats can have certain hereditary health concerns. One condition associated with the breed is hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM), a disease that affects the heart muscle. Responsible breeding, appropriate health screening, regular veterinary care, and routine checkups are important parts of supporting a Sphynx cat’s health.

Are your breeding cats health tested?

At Naked Whiskers, we are committed to responsible breeding practices and appropriate health screening. We carefully monitor the health of our breeding cats and work with veterinary professionals to make informed decisions with the long-term health of the breed in mind.

What vaccinations will my kitten receive?

Before leaving for their new home, our kittens receive age-appropriate veterinary care and vaccinations based on their age and our veterinarian’s recommendations. Each family receives documentation of their kitten’s health care history.

Are your kittens examined by a veterinarian before going home?

Yes. Every Naked Whiskers kitten receives a veterinary health examination to ensure they are healthy and ready for the transition to their forever family.

When can my kitten go home?

Our kittens remain with us until they are developmentally ready to transition into their new homes. This allows them time for proper socialization, growth, and early learning with their mother and littermates.

What do I need to prepare before bringing my kitten home?

We recommend preparing a warm, safe, and comfortable space with:

  • A quality kitten food recommended for their age
  • Food and water bowls
  • A litter box and appropriate litter
  • A soft bed and cozy blankets
  • Toys and scratching surfaces
  • A carrier for transportation
  • A trusted veterinarian for ongoing care

We also provide guidance to help make your kitten’s transition as smooth as possible.

Will you be available after I bring my kitten home?

Absolutely. Becoming part of the Naked Whiskers family means you will always have a source of support. We are happy to answer questions, celebrate milestones, and help you provide the best possible life for your Sphynx companion.
